Balance
Like every good American, we spent our day after Christmas not shopping up a storm but exploring a semi-abondoned, decaying gravel pit in Vermont. Corie's father had been eyeing it and invited us to come join him for a photo fest. Of course, we wouldn't have missed the opportunity.
Mutiple wool and cotton layers later, we scrambled over old conveyer belts, inspected the shells of catapillar bulldozers, and peered into shattered windshields. Old industry draws my interest mostly on account of the form and color. But in this situation it was the juxtaposition of the natural and the industrial. With the Green Mountains melting in the background of the gray day, one could find evidence of the overpowering surge of nature.
An old car has weeds wrapped around its gear shaft. Pools of water froze into wind sheared tundra with strong reeds breaking for the sun. The metal will not turn to dust anytime soon but it can make a new home for mushrooms.
And I will admit we did make it to a few outlets later. But only to warm our frozen fingers and toes! And *he says sheepishly* to snatch up a $30 sweater at J-Crew.
Update:
As per my dear's request, here is a quick (and soft) photo of the madness at J-Crew. It does not nearly do justice to the scene. There is a reason why I avoid the Upper East Side.
Interesting shots. I particularly like the second to last one. It reminds me of a Goldsworthy. Jamie and Honor gave me the documentary and Virginia his latest book so he's been in my mind lately.
