Well, the yard is not closed. It is no longer used by the navy, but there are over 200 businesses located inside. There are some maritime related industries but also a movie production facility, warehousing, an artifical sweetener distributer, and artist studios. Here is the official site. much of the dry docks, cranes, and old brick buildings are still is use.

We are most interested in the row of dilapidated mansions, known as admiral's row, that are situated on a corner of the yard. Check out this for background.
