Gowanus, Brooklyn

This soon-to-be Holiday Inn Express is on Union Street about two blocks from the Gowanus Canal. Maybe Swoon will hit it when it is complete.

holiday inn express is a hell of a lot better than what's in the gowanus today. and now people who live in the neighborhood can have people come to visit without a trip across the river or $200+ at the brooklyn marriott. hotels have to go somewhere. it's a lot better on 3rd Ave than on 5th or Smith.

It is a curious location for a hotel and I am interested in seeing whether folk will feel comfortable staying on what is a rather sketchy stretch at night.

Of course, the hotel, itself, may accelerate change to the rather industrial immediate area.

Regardless of my opinion on this particular project, I do agree that there is a need for affordable places in South Brooklyn.

My parents are going to love it when they visit! (And we're going to love not having 6 people staying in 750 sq. feet together!)

That area won't be sketchy for much longer.

well, i used to live 2 blocks away on carroll & 3rd, and even though it was scruffy around the edges and there was a pay phone on every corner of the intersection. that street was incredibly safe due in part, allegedly, to the "italian" presence.

I live on that street, about a half block down...you're right..it's barely sketchy now, and won't be much longer...I hope I can still keep my rent! this stretch is a gem.
