Text today
So, no photos today. Internet connection at home is down...could be a problem for another week or two. Thank you construction people on Van Brunt Street. It was so nice of you to CUT our connection!
But, in the spirit of my better half's well written and well read blog, some random and unrelated questions:
I need to buy a suit for my upcoming wedding. I don't want to go black tie, but I also want to get something a bit more special than what I wear to a nice dinner. Any suggestions on styles or stores? We went to Brooks Brothers yesterday and it was pretty much a bust.
If you could travel to Spain, where would you go and why?
Does anyone have tips on the NCAA basketball tournament? My office is actually having a pool this year and I haven't been paying attention. I actually won a couple hundred dollars in a March madness pool a few years ago. Mostly because I liked the word Gonzaga and I chose this once underdog school to make it past most other's expectations.
Say it with me: Gonzaga.
Isn't it delightful?
Ok. That is all.
Brooks Brothers is a store for all events.
The fabrics are better and they will fit you, which makes a big difference.
Out of the west coast Neiman Marcus has a great suit department.
The New York Times this past weekend devoted an entire magizine to men's fashion, if you get hold of it, you may find the name of a store that sell suites that you respond too.

My husband and I eloped last year and we were able to get a suit at Men's Warehouse, with all of the accessories (i.e. shirt, belt, shoes, etc), for a reasonable price and within one week's time (including alterations). The suit was absolutely gorgeous. Plus, the service was amazing.

syms?
also, i don't think gonzaga to go to the final four. prob the sweet 16 though.
a lot of people seem to like bc, so you might want to stay away from them. especially with villanova in their regional.

my husband got his tux and another suit at men's warehouse for the wedding and was quite pleased.
as for spain, i travelled to barcelona, madrid, sevilla and valencia a few years ago - barcelona was my favorite, and sevilla and valencia were great too. madrid i was nice but less unique so if time is an issue, i would skip it. i never made it to granada and regretted that, and up north, i heard that bilbao and san sebastian are great.

I don't have much info on the suit, but Spain I do have.
Toledo is 45 minutes south of Madrid, and a beautiful hilltop town. You can get lost in the streets, and there are not many tourists there. Another great town where tourists don't usually goto is Ronda, way up in the mountains. They have a really old bullring - it was in one of the Madonna videos - or that's what they kept telling me. Sevilla is nice to goto for culture and flamenco, as well as Cordoba for its' massive cathedral. Madrid is nice - but I'm partial to Andalusia.

There's a cool clothes shop on 7th street and Bowrey (?), it's on the same block as McSorley's. Their clothes are 1940s-ish suits, I've always wanted to purchase something from them. The clothes are stylish, but tastefully so.
A few months ago, the Times travel section ran a story about the Pyranees Mountains and the Spanish/French cultural hybrid inhabiting them. It looked like a breathtaking place to go. Also, there's a cool book entitled "Ornament of the World" which delves into the Medieval relationships between Muslims, Jews and Christians in Spain. It's definitely worth checking out before you go.

Spain - where to begin! I spent 6 months in barcelona and traveled a bit - I would also add Granada to the list and Barcelona....always wanted to go to Santiago de Compostela and never made it..it all depends...how long do you have and when will you go?

There is a great spot for discount designer suits on 56th Street (between 5th and 6th Aves.) in Manhattan. I don't have the name or the address handy but it closer to 6th Ave. on the second floor of an office building. Look for a man handing out flyers and he will direct you up. I swear this is legit. I just snagged two suits (1 Hugo Boss and 1 Zegna for $400 each with alterations included.) Once you are up there, the digs are pretty cramped and basic, but if you dig, you will find stuff. It is particularly good for basic (but really nice) suits in black and gray. A basic black Hugo Boss or Zegna might be great for a wedding.
There is a similar store on 5th Ave at about 49th Street. Much nicer surroundings but the suits are more expensive (around $600 or so.) Good luck.

I would go to Girona, it's about an hour north of Barcelona by train: http://www.fodors.com/wire/archives/001089.cfm
1/2 of Girona is composed of these old fortresses and castle walls and it's like walking around a preserved labyrinth. It can be eerily quiet there. There's one hostel in town and it's super cheap with bunk beds and all. Also, I don't remember what the restaurant is called, but there's one in the entry-way to this huge stairwell that leads up to the town's cathedral and it was the best meal I had in Spain:smashed roasted figs with prosciutto and pecorino on toasted bread and wine and olives and all that. Delicious.

We do not have a specific plan on the Spain trip yet, but Corie and I have been talking about going for some time. I figured that it might be a good time to start researching. It is pretty obvious that we may need to consider mutiple trips. :)
Thanks for all of the advice.

Barcelona-awesome but full of revelers. Good point of departure for day trips.
Madrid-Like New York but with better dressed people and plazas. Epicenter of lisped Spanish.
Valencia-sleepy, with pretty gardens, a bull ring and gypsies.
Tarragona-sleepy, on a cliff, Roman aquaducts, Roman amphitheatre, kick-ass paella, mormon missionaries, cheap as sin pensiones run by elderly ladies and their drunk husbands. Also: bats.
Sitges-a nice place to show off your waxed chest, get a sunburn, waste money on fitted tees. Don't go there.
Spain!

First, I recently stumbled upon this blog while doing a Google image search for St. Patrick's Day graphics. I'm so thrilled that I did!
Second, my heart is with the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt), but I'm not sure that they can make it past the first or second round. Watch Gray though. What a powerhouse!
Third, understated elegance is, I think, the look you are going for. Symbolic of a modern man who reveres class in a subtle manner. Brooks Brothers is an excellent choice for this look.
Fourth, heading to Spain in June for 2.5 weeks. My cousin is getting married in Monforte, a small village in northwestern Spain. He met his beautiful bride-to-be while living there to learn the Spanish wine industry. They may be moving to London once they're married! After the wedding, we're doing a 2 week tour of the country. Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, you name it, we're probably going there!

For suits try symms.
For Spain, definitely go to Barcelona. I second the posts before me who recommend skipping Madrid, not much worth seeing there. You can skip Pamplona too. Also, when in Barcelona, check out Citges, which is a short train ride away for a nice getaway at charming beach-town. Other than that, I've heard great things from anyone who's ever been about southern Spain, (though I've not made it there yet) especially Seville.
For the NCAA, I would ride Gonzaga again this year, at least until the sweet 16. Also my big upset prediction is Syracuse beating Duke in the third round.

Go to Pink or Paul Smith on 5th Avenue. Also, try Century 21. Good luck!

I second the nomination for Granada. It's more than just the Alhambra--it's a multilayered city that offers the present day and the past. Stay in the "present" town in a modern hotel and stroll the streets of the bazaar; walk up the narrow winding streets to the "past" and see the old folks hanging out in the village square, then go to eat at a restaurant where nobody speaks a bit of English and they bring you really delicious food. It's just an amazing place. Also a good place to pay homage to that kickass queen Isabel to whom we owe so much. =)

my final four:
Uconn
Ohio State
Duke
UCLA
Watch out for the Bruins, they've played through all sorts of injuries all year and have finally started to play some very good ball on both ends of the court. They won their tournament and are on a seven game winning streak. They could beat anybody on any given day. Can they put good games back to back to back etc?

I love Barcelona, great architecture and street culture, food and beaches. My husband bought his suit for our wedding at banana republic (linen, cream colored) and it looked great if you want a less formal style.
